When will the BETA be released, and how will it be released?
2:02
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Hey everyone, looks like like we've got some great questions brewing!
2:02
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Hey guys!
2:02
[Comment From ace_player-]
Will there be some kind of system where, if you stay close to your squad, you have a higher defense or attack power and if you leave your squad (go someplace else without your squad) you have a lower defense or attack power?
2:02
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: We're definitely going to be doing a beta. It hasn't started yet -- and we'll get more details out soon! Stay tuned!
2:02
[Comment From pcwzrd13]
Is there going to be support for a keyboard and mouse?
2:02
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
All leaders have special abilities that you get when you stay close to them :)
2:03
[Comment From Grintoth]
Hello! I've been counting down to this chat for the past couple of days :)
2:03
[Comment From Ascended_Saiyan]
When we purchase MAG on release day; will there be a squad leader, platoon leader, and OIC picked/selected immediately? Or, will we be leader-less at first?
2:03
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: So stay close to them!
2:03
[Comment From Izl]
Hey there gods among men!
2:03
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: No support for keyboard mouse -- it'll be ps3 controllers only Smile
2:03
[Comment From Guest]
is there a clan system and if so will there b in game clan tournies?
2:03
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: We have plans in place to make sure there are leaders available when the game goes live
2:04
[Comment From eagleeyes23]
do you have a relase date target
2:04
[Comment From kingofnexus]
Will MAG be a downloadable PSN title?
2:05
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Okay Clans... we're supporting clans yes, but we're still working on the details, so stay tuned
2:05
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Release is targeted at "Fall 2009" -- definitely this year
2:05
[Comment From McDewbie]
after you choose a faction, is there any way you can change to another one? and will you have to make a avatar sorta like in WoW or do you get one per account?
2:05
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Kingo - MAG is too massive to be a mere downloadable title :)
2:05
[Comment From Guest]
i been watching the videos and i notice its a fps pleaseeee tell me theres a option for 3rd person pleassseee
2:06
[Comment From Redx]
Hi, is there going to be a TPV( third person view) option on MAG or are ya thinking about it? thanks
2:06
[Comment From CmOwns]
How about an interactive MAG website where we can moniter stats?
2:06
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Yep, you can change over to different factions, but there will be an associated EXP cost
2:06
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: We specifically chose 1st person - wanted to make sure the player was super close to the action.
2:07
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: We wanted to do one version (1st person) right, rather than half-bake multiple solutions.
2:07
[Comment From Katsuo7171]
You've talked about there being a daily incentive for why we would like to get back into mag on a daily basis. What exactly are these incentives.
2:07
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: CmOwns -- yes, we'll have a website up where you can see stats, state of the game world, all that good stuff
2:07
[Comment From Mullet_head]
The animal on the S.V.E.R logo has been debated. Could you give us a final answer on what it is?
2:08
[Comment From Stan]
What is the secret for having absolutly no lag?
2:08
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: ah, good question Mullet_head -- its actually a wolf. What was your guess?
2:09
[Comment From Matt Reilly]
And MAG is the official title?
2:09
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Good question Stan! Lag is tricky...
2:09
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: The game world will convey bonuses and incentives to Private Armies in controls of different contracts around the world
2:09
[Comment From Mullet_head]
I just lost a bet Mike I thought it was a Badger.
2:09
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Typing too fast!
2:10
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: MAG _is_ the official title. But just MAG :)
2:10
[Comment From Joey]
To what extent will vehicles play a role in MAG if at all?
2:10
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: We've put a great deal of work into the servers to make sure to minimize it. The fact that we've got dedicated servers up there forwarding the most important info will really help address LAG.
2:10
[Comment From Elsa]
female avatars?
2:11
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Sorry Mullet, hopefully it didn't cost you too much!
2:11
[Comment From PSN = drownedphoniex]
What are the various game modes? We already know about Domination, but is there a Capture The Flag type mode?
2:12
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Joey - The larger maps have driveable/mannable ground vehicles that players can use tactically, as well as play a part of the 128-player map mission objective. Air vehicles are used for insertions and support strikes but aren't pilotable. The smaller maps don't have vehciles, we want to focus on the infantry-level experience for those
2:12
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Sorry Elsa, MAG will not feature any female avatars -- to do it right, you need a completely dedicated set of animations, just didn't fit our memory budget.
2:12
[Comment From Cruizer8]
Will there be some sort of splitscreen mode?
2:13
[Comment From TJ]
Are you guys going to show MAG @ E3?
2:13
[Comment From TheSorrow_101]
Will MAG feature a single player campaign or is it strictly multiplayer ?
2:14
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Cruizer8, great question! We've got huge environments and lots of streaming going on to achieve fidelity -- split screen would cause some real limitations.
2:14
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: TJ - we'll definitely be showing off MAG at E3!
2:14
[Comment From Kaako]
Do the guns feel more arcady or are you going for a more realistic approach(1-2 hit kills) ?
2:14
[Comment From P-Sheddy]
How is voice chat going to work with that many people?
2:15
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
Phoniex - there aren't the traditional game modes you might expect from smaller FPS titles. Basically each map has an associated game mode. We have a more tradiitonal team v. team mode for 64 players. We have a "capture the objective points" game mode for another set of 64 maps. the 128 maps have Attackers trying to steal a vehicle from the Defending side. 256 is an all-out battle for control points.
2:15
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: MAG is strictly online, although we will have an offline training course to let you get up to speed with controls, weapons, and all the equipment!
2:16
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Voice chat uses MAG's command structure to maintain sanity! Squads can talk together, then squad leaders talk up the chain, and so on...
2:17
[Comment From SteveO1683]
Has developing Socom helped you achieve what you want to do in MAG?
2:17
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: The weapons strike a balance between arcadey and realistic. Also, depending on your loadout you may be more or less capable of taking rounds. Ideally we want experienced FPS players to feel comfortable but also make sure the game is approachable for all players.
2:17
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: SOCOM has really helped us make huge progress in MAG. All the online things we have learned over the years -- all aspects including level design as well as engineering were big.
2:18
[Comment From silentscope101]
Will there be a way to join games that our friends are all ready in?
2:18
[Comment From KennyW]
Is it going to be hard to gain ranks in this game? Or is there some sort of side upgrades that you can unlock for each class or rank
2:18
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: MAG servers were built from the ground up and feature lots of the features that we had wanted in previous SOCOM titles.
2:19
[Comment From Silent_wolf]
How big/balanced are the maps? Where in the world are they held?
2:19
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
silentscope101 - if your friends are already on your PSN friends list and they are the same army as you (so, you'll only be able to join friends playing for Raven, if you're a member of Raven), then you'll be able to quickly join them in their game.
2:19
[Comment From Sunfrog]
Is there a storyline at all or just grab a gun and go?
2:20
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: KennyW, we expect the ranks to be "challenging" but not hard to obtain. There are lots of skill-points that you acquire and can use to unlock specific equipment, weapons, and character skills. The leadership ladder is similar, but allows access to the leadership ranks.
2:21
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: The biggest maps are about 1 square kilometre .. so big! The maps are based on three global regions - Alaska, Central Asia and Central america. How balanced are they - I'm gonna say perfectly balanced ;)
2:21
[Comment From CrimsonFox13]
What's your most favorite thing about the game so far?
2:21
[Comment From million_monkeys]
What will the health system be like in MAG?
2:22
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: CrimsonFox13, I think I'm most excited about the advancement system -- it keeps me coming back each day (oh, and the fact that I work here too :-))
2:22
[Comment From Zac77]
Will you support DLC
2:23
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: There's a storyline behind the whole game, in terms of the world, where Raven, Valor and SVER come from etc. However there's no single player component, the story all takes place online as the armies fight it out. You'll have to help define the story, as a player and make sure your army comes out on top
2:23
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: The advancement system is great, and I'm always bummed when we've got to wipe the internal database!!!
2:23
[Comment From LunarHybrid]
How are you going to handle cheaters?
2:24
[Comment From Omen_20]
What kinds of missions do squad leaders command, are they from a list of choices, or do they just make them up themselves?
2:24
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: CrimsonFox - I love how dynamic the game is. You'll always be presented with new situations and new opportunties to play. That's the biggest thing scale does for us, allows for a huge range of gameplay and experiences in one title.
2:24
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Ah, cheaters... the bain of the online community!
2:26
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: We've got a number of things we're doing -- and are most excited about our dedicated servers (have I mentioned that before? :-)) It really allows us to do some cool things in the game, including *much* better cheat detection. We haven't decided on "specific" responses for when we find the cheaters though.
2:27
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Ed is reloading his wireless-blue-tooth-keyboard with batteries -- sorry for the wardrobe malfunction :-)
2:27
Jeff Rubenstein, PlayStation.Blog: While Ed takes care of that, let me remind everyone, that you're speaking with Mike Gutmann and Ed Byrne from Zipper Interactive. Keep those MAG questions coming!
2:28
[Comment From LunarHybrid]
What inspired zipper to take on such a large project like this? 128 players is quite a lot in one game.
2:28
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: million_monkeys; its a "points based" system -- so you'll know what your health is exactly. Lots of different ways to "regain" health (medit, firstaid, medics, supply points, bunkers, etc.)
2:28
[Comment From Rijckaert]
How long have you been working on this game ?
2:29
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: The missions are whatever the leaders in the match feel is important to win. there's a tonne of different objectives to choose to hold/defend/destroy. As the game progresses the OIC, 'toon leader and squad leader will all co-ordinate to determine what the squads need to do to win. there are no pre-created missions, though there will be "default" objectives for squad leaders to make sure a squad always has something to work towards.
2:29
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: I'm back! This keyboard sucks!
2:30
[Comment From Edo411]
Get a logitech one Ed, they're awesome and last ages :D
2:30
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Rijckaert, we've been working on this game for quite some time. If pressed, I'd say we've been working on it for about 3yrs. Wow, that feels like such a long time...
2:31
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Lunar - we wanted to take the online FPS experience into hyperdrive. 256 is something we've not seen before on a console, but Zipper has a history of tackling "firsts" and we knew we could handle it, and make it great.
2:31
[Comment From coolfondo]
will there be some sort of punishment for team kills? (like negitive xp)
2:31
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: LOL, we won't tell you what "brand" it is Embarassed
2:31
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Logitech - got it, thanks. Can someone help me with the weather in Seattle too? :)
2:31
[Comment From SHPLIG]
How are you inspired or influenced from other successful [or not] FPS games?
2:32
[Comment From shootthebandit]
what defines a member of SVER from a member of RAVEN or VALOR? do they each have special abilities (if so can you provide us with examples) or is it just asthetic?
2:33
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: coolfondo, we don't have any "negative xp" system -- although your rating will drop off pretty quickly if you've got a habit of team kills... Our servers will be looking at that aspect as part of the cheat prevention tech as well.
2:34
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: We're huge players here, and we take a look at every game that comes out to see what the good and bad might be. We've been inspired visually by a lot of the shooters that have come out recently (*cough* Killzone 2 *cough*) and we're always finding inspiration from games that aren't even shooters in terms of the best experience for MAG
2:34
[Comment From Mullet_Head]
I assume that you both have tried playing as all armies. Which do you guys like best?
2:35
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Norweigan snow... its a deal, you can send it to us here in a padded envelope :)
2:35
[Comment From Thrasher20]
Will there be a fee to play MAG?
2:35
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Each SVER, RAVEN, and VALOR have unique weapons, vehicles, uniforms -- and they've all definitely have unique attitudes!
2:36
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Thrasher20; no MAG is free to play out of the box!
2:36
[Comment From InvaderZum]
What type of trophies will be in the game, besides kill X bad guys with X weapon?
2:37
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Mullet - yeah we swap around a lot in our playtests here. I have to say the anarchist in me loves SVER, But I'm from Ireland so the euro in me is gravitating towards Raven. In the end, I expect I'll probably play all three as there are great elements to all of them.
2:37
[Comment From Sunfrog]
If your squad leader gets killed does someone else take over?
2:38
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Mullet_Head, I've definitely played all 3 -- and I'm always surprised. I've become a big Valor fan -- they're just bad ass -- although everyone I talk to has their own favorite.
2:38
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Zim - we have internal "ribbons" and medals, as well as PSN trophy support which allows players to differentiate themselves but also be rewarded for playing a variety of different styles and tactics.
2:38
[Comment From Trioptical]
Will the training section allow players to sample the weapons of each army before commiting to one of them?
2:39
[Comment From Guest]
can you set up smaller games so that it doesnt have to be 256x256 but maybe more like 16x16?
2:39
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Sunfrog, if the leader gets killed then they'll be back at the next respawn. If they drop out, then someone on the battlefield will be promoted. That someone will still need to "opt-in" for leadership and meet the rank-requirements.
2:39
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Trioptical - you have to pick your side before you go into training, but you will be able to move between the armies.
2:39
[Comment From Ryder556]
Does S.V.E.R stand for anything?
2:41
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
Ryder - it does. But you'll have to play them to find out... muhahahahaha
2:41
[Comment From million_monkeys]
Is MAG placed in a modern day setting or a futuristic one?
2:41
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Sure, we've got multiple game modes -- 32x32, 64x64, 128x128. (But, just for clarity, we don't have 256x256 which would be 512!)
2:42
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: MAG takes place in the "near future" ; roughly 20 years from now -- but I don't consider it a futuristic game (no laser beam weapons)...
2:43
[Comment From cros1625]
How will the respawn work?
2:43
[Comment From bohrboy18]
Do you have to be a squad leader if you dont want to be one?
2:44
[Comment From grizdakillr]
this is a big question on the forums-Is there a sprint button?
2:44
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
Wow... respawn in a 256 is a complex thing to describe. Let me summarise... you spawn in "timed waves" and you spawn in with your squad. Some lucky squads get to paradrop into the combat zone or ride in on APCs.
2:44
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: ohrboy18 -- no sir, you DO NOT have to be a squad leader if you don't want. The leadership system is an "Opt-In" system only. You can be an uber-1337 operator and not have to lead guys around...
2:44
[Comment From Anti-Steven]
Can I build myself up to be a "medic" or something similar?
2:45
[Comment From Glenn]
I just wanted to let you know this game sounds amazing.
2:46
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Oh yea, we've lots of skill progress choices; you don't really need to dedicate to a specific class either. You can specialize along a specific class or pickup unique skills and be a jack-of-all-trades.
2:46
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
Yes there is a sprint button, which ties into your character's endurance. You can actively increase your sprint duraction by sinking EXP into it, if you're the kind of player that wants to get around in a hurry.
2:46
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Thanks Glenn! We're excited to get it into your hands!
2:46
[Comment From Grintoth]
Can you go prone?
2:46
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Glenn - THANKS! We've been waiting to tell you guys about MAG for a while, it's awesome how excited you guys all are.
2:47
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Grintoth, oh yea, you can go prone and sneak behind enemy lines or try to snipe from a distance.
2:47
[Comment From Zach]
Would you guys somewhat call this a MMOFPS
2:48
[Comment From Edo411]
Love you guys, really appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions
2:48
[Comment From DancingStormtrooper]
Will everyone get a chance to play the top squad leader role or just a select few? how does that work exactly?
2:49
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
It's an FPS first, then it's and MMO. But the massive part is how all the games played come together to affect the world of MAG. There's no sitting around waiting for a cleric to show up :)
2:49
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Edo411, no problem -- its great to have a forum to answer all these questions. We know how important it is to have community support for online games and this is just a part of the puzzle.
2:49
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Edo - we appreciate you too, its why we make games, to see people play them ;)
2:50
[Comment From MagNuM-OPs]
I want to touch this game NOW. I cant wait for it to be released.
2:51
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: the "Squad Leader Choosing Machine" (tm, heh heh) attempts to give everyone who qualifies to lead and wants to, a chance to lead a squad.
2:51
[Comment From Johnny Rzeznik]
So... how do the games played come together to affect the world of MAG?
2:51
[Comment From TheSorrow_101]
Will the objectives change on the fly like in Killzone 2 or will there be one set objective throughout the match ?
2:51
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: We are too MagNuM -- can't wait for everyone to jump in and play!
2:52
Jeff Rubenstein, PlayStation.Blog: Just a few minutes left with Mike and Ed from Zipper - please get your final questions in now!
2:52
[Comment From Sarobi]
ALRIGHT! you gots got me... ill trade you guys rare pokemon cards if you let me in the beta first :)
2:52
[Comment From PhatGrip]
Will weather play a role in the game?
2:53
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: Rzeznik - let's just say that every mission/game played affects the global state of the shadow War... and the state of the Shadow War conveys bonuses and advantages to those in control of different global "contracts"
2:53
[Comment From shootthebandit]
can i give a FRAGO to an individual player?
2:54
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: There is a primary focus in each game time, but there are secondary and tertiary objectives that play a major role in the battle.
2:54
[Comment From easyaspie00]
Will there be any sort of destructible environment?
2:55
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper:
Shoot... - no, FRAGOs are set per squad, and are set on specific objectives in the world, but you can always use your headset to direct squadmates to specific places or enemies
2:55
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Pokemon cards? Seriously? Maybe yugio cards :-) Seriously, we'll get beta info out soon and are going to be looking for lots of players!
2:56
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: I don't need Pokemon cards, but I am looking for a Valkyria Chronicles action figure to complete my collection... man, I'm sad :)
2:56
[Comment From DaSkreech]
Enemies? So I can permanently paint the other sides OIC for death ?
2:56
[Comment From Guest]
Huge fan of Zipper Interactive's work here. How are the 256 player matches coming along? I mean how often do you guys test such massive battles and have you run into any issues, like lag or frame rate drops? Do you feel confident that the game CAN be released this year?
2:56
[Comment From cros1625]
I WANT MAG NOW!!!!!!!!
2:57
[Comment From Johnny Rzeznik]
Thank you for the reply, good luck getting things together for a great beta test, this is sounding to be what I expected this gen from shooters on consoles.
2:57
[Comment From bravo]
Thanks for doing this chat Ed and Mike! great answers. Even more hyped for the game :)
2:57
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Weather will have an impact, where we try to push the atmospheric effects -- but there won't be a dynamic weather system (although it certainly isn't because we didn't think about it!)
2:57
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: DaSkreetch, no, we can't paint the enemy OIC for death, you'll just need to find him :)
2:57
[Comment From Draicus]
How long does it take to fill a 256-player match? Will we be sitting in lobbies forever pre-match or do players get filed in as the game progresses?
2:59
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Lots of questions there... We've been running live 256 player tests since late last year -- they're really coming along. We run them near-daily (with bots) and then about every week with real people. We take advantage of those tests to monitor all the servers and make sure the network code is working as we'd hoped.
3:00
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Yes, I'm CONFIDENT MAG will be relesed this year!
3:00
Ed Byrne - Creative Director @Zipper: When a 256 game starts, we queue people up and you won't be stuck in a lobby with a list of names (you can tool around in the UI, work on your character etc.). when enough players have signed on to that game (we have a % for each gametype) the game will launch. Jason, our guru of all things complicated, is working on a system to make this as painless as possible.
3:00
Mike Gutmann - Vice President @ Zipper: Its going to be a very exciting year for us and I'm glad you're looking forward to it!
3:01
Jeff Rubenstein, PlayStation.Blog: Thanks again to Mike and Ed from Zipper interactive, and to the thousands of you who sent in questions and comments for the team. Any last comments for us, guys?

i think you are making a potentially ground breaking game. I hope it will be a huge success
And that was the live chat session. I'll have another story tomorrow summarizing what we've learned today about this exciting game. I asked a lot of questions but so did others. At least two of my questions made it through.Woot!
